Theological Book Club:

Sinners: Jesus and His Earliest Followers

by Greg Cary

Greg Carey sets forth an excellent and innovative example of how to read the character of Jesus from a literary, historical, and theological perspective, with an emphasis on the ethics of interpretation for the postmodern world. This bold study is not afraid to take on the topic of Jesus and examine Jesus’ responses to those considered "sinners" in the New Testament. Pick up a copy and join us for the discussion at the church. All are welcome!

Secular Book Club:

The Last Hurrah

by Edwin O'Connor

Another oldie but goodie has been selected as our summer read. The plot of this novel focuses on a mayoral election in an unnamed city in which a veteran Irish Democratic Party politician is running for another term as Mayor. A veteran and adept machine politician and, arguably, corrupt as well, the novel portrays him as a flawed great man with many achievements to his credit. The main body of the novel gives a detailed and insightful view of urban politics and tells the story of the end of an entire era of American politics, specifically the era of the “big-city politician.”

Pick up a copy and join us for the discussion. All are welcome.
